May Day Bundt

This year we held a May Day BBQ at our house. There were many guests that were invited by a friend of ours, in fact, we'd never met the extra guests. As it is customary to gift the host/hostess with a dessert- we received a few that day. One of desserts, in particular, made me laugh. A woman that has never been to my home presented me with a covered silver platter and said, "This is for you, thank you for opening your home". Naturally, I thanked her and lifted the cover as my friend C stood by my side. To my surprise, there was a beautiful, yellow bundt cake sprinkled with powdered sugar under the lid...and it was already missing a big slice. I casually brought it into the house while our first time guest found a cozy chair near the spit where the lamb was roasting. I told C to close the door and we just giggled and giggled-and took a picture. I have proof, Greeks do know what a bundt cake is, they make them all of the time...and some of them are so delicious that they have to eat a slice before they bring it to the party!

Now here's a clip from one of my favorite scenes from the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I couldn't help but think of this scene as we were giggling.

Have a great week everyone!

  7. Christie...I know...it's classic. I just wish that someone had a camera to take a pic of my expression as I lifted the lid.:)
The cake was delicious though, wasn't it?

  9. That is hilarious. Of course, I'm always very insecure about my cooking so I always think I should taste things before I take them to other people's houses because what if they are inedible? But I never do...

  10. That is classic... I love it!!! Ha! Do you know how many times my husband has eaten a slice of cake I've made to bring to some coffee morning or tea or dinner? It's happened so many times that I've started making cup cakes - then nobody knows if a piece or two is missing!!!!

  11. Mel-I'm completely empathetic in regards to baking as I feel that I'm a much better cook than a baker. Baking always makes me insecure and I've even brought a flat cake to someone's house a few months ago...but it did taste great. I know that this isn't practical for most people, but now I usually make 2 cakes so that my family doesn't feel slighted-and I usually use them as my tasters. Otherwise, there would be chunks missing from a cake since they'd be all over it.

Toma, that's a great idea! And regarding cakes and missing slices...my husband & yours sound about the same. I have a hunch that the cake in question fell victim to the hands (and stomach) of a significant other.:)

    Have a great weekend everyone!

  13. Grotesko...I know...it was hard to contain myself -and you know how improper of a it is to bring an eaten cake to someone's house-especially here.
I also have a hard time containing myself every time I watch this scene...have a good weekend and give kisses to everyone:)
