I love that....Oh Laurie, you made me laugh so hard. I love that..."hairy eyeball"...that's funny! I like your solution, but in my case I'd be baking up a storm! :) I do, however, wave and smile a lot. It seems that I get even worse looks then.

I understand not wanting increased traffic as well...it's really quiet here. But the problem that you have in spring is what happens all winter here. Mud, mud, mud...and more mud. We slide our way to the main road sometimes and the school bus has been stuck out here. It's just messy and hard to deal with all of the time.
It was very nice of your husband to get you out of your mess, he's definitely a keeper! I wouldn't have gotten out of the car either;)Cherylhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07147148590536843781noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6574444945294114193.post-76501710560750161532008-08-19T05:53:00.000+03:002008-08-19T05:53:00.000+03:00We call that particular dirty look that only yiayi...We call that particular dirty look that only yiayiades can give the "hairy eyeball." And yes, I know it well. The few that really give me the heebie-jeebies and live where I can't avoid going by their houses I've started stopping and giving them plates of cookies or a nice little cake. They think its just one more wierd behavior from the American, but it also stops them from looking at me so mean when I go by.

We live on a dirt road in Alaska, but luckily our houses are far enough away from the road that the dust isn't so bad. We've had neighborhood meetings to discuss paving the road, but no one wants to do it - we're all afraid people will start using our little road as a shortcut if we do - now the dirt and potholes deter them.

Our real problem is in the spring - some years snow melt and ground water combine to turn the road into an impassible squiqqly swamp - I got stuck in it once when I was all dressed up for a meeting. I didn't want to get muddy so was marooned in the car. My husband had to ocme from work to rescue me. He was really nice about having to crawl around in the mud on a work day. I wouldn't have been.Laurie Constantinohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04662040688336742830noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6574444945294114193.post-68760059860715753422008-08-17T09:50:00.000+03:002008-08-17T09:50:00.000+03:00Maria, I know that watering down the road may help...Maria, I know that watering down the road may help but it's only temporary. There's so much water wasted. It's a shame.Cherylhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07147148590536843781noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6574444945294114193.post-23986367505940364312008-08-17T09:48:00.000+03:002008-08-17T09:48:00.000+03:00Hi Lulu, yes the dirt road is just outside of ever...Hi Lulu, yes the dirt road is just outside of everyone's gates and how far one's house is from the gate varies. I admit, the dust is a problem but really, unless they pave the road it's almost certain that the dust will fly. In the winter, the school bus got stuck in mud and we had to help pull it out. It would be so much nicer to pave the roads.Cherylhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07147148590536843781noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6574444945294114193.post-17377710045538932772008-08-17T08:47:00.000+03:002008-08-17T08:47:00.000+03:00Ah. If the houses are that close to the road, paving would be a very good thing!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6574444945294114193.post-83941691657169591522008-08-17T07:21:00.000+03:002008-08-17T07:21:00.000+03:00@Lulu: the dirt road is the thing you walk on as s...@Lulu: the dirt road is the thing you walk on as soon as you leave the gate of your house

And yes, Cheryl, what a waste of water just to settle the dust on a dirt road; we have similar problems, although ours has been paved recentlyMaria Verivakihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10440852486788630957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6574444945294114193.post-63446940303955968322008-08-17T07:11:00.000+03:002008-08-17T07:11:00.000+03:00Hmm, how far from the road are the houses and gard...Hmm, how far from the road are the houses and gardens?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
