Weekend harvest

Our garden is coming along nicely. This is what we harvested on Sunday afternoon. We only had one green cucumber. The rest of them are yellowish...something is wrong. I was told a few different things by a few different people.

First, someone said that I'm watering them too much.

Next, I was told that they need to be fertilized.

Shortly after that-they're getting too much sun.

Finally, we're not watering them enough. (sigh)

I suppose that it's up to us to figure out what our cucumbers need. ???? I've grown them before on my balcony in Milwaukee so it's not my first encounter with this veggie. Only time and testing will tell what's wrong with the cucumbers.

So, aside from that little mystery things seem to be growing well. We're really enjoying our first real garden. Here are some photos that I took last week...

  1. Cheryl, I am trying hard to produce some of your staff, in my garden without success!

  2. I wish you better luck my friend! It's not as easy as it may seem. You should see the weeds growing around the veggies...I didn't take pictures of those. :)

  5. Thanks Maria! It's fun to grow and pick our own. Izabella will go and pick a roma or cherry tomato, wash it...and eat it as a snack. I have no problem with that sort of snacking! :)

  6. all i know is that no matter what the color or shape, anything grown in the garden is about 50 bajillion times more tasty and satisfying than the most perfect-looking veg you find in the market. end of story. (but i think the yellow=too much water might be true? - must ask Christos)

  7. Ado, I totally agree! Everything is much more tasty! I'm overloaded with tomatoes now...time to dice them up per your suggestion.
About the cucumbers-I'm leaning toward too much watering also.

  8. I'm so glad you're having success with your first ever garden. There really is nothing more satisfying than cooking food you grew yourself. As for the cucumbers, there's a zillion reasons why they go yellow, and everything you've been told could be true. It could also be a virus. Or bugs. Cucumbers go yellow when they're unhappy. I'd try fertilizing them as the first step in figuring out the problem.

  9. Thanks Laurie! We're glad too. I agree, it's great to use our own veggies although...we're growing tired of zucchini and fasolakia! :) We have a zillion tomatoes and I'm starting to preserve them now. I've given a ton away also. I'm currently drying oregano and mint for the winter and really, just enjoying it when I can. It's a lot of work but worth it. We've been gifted corn from our neighbors and were like, duh!-why didn't we plant any? Buy hey, there's always next year. Glad to see that you're up and running again!
