Summer garden

Our summer garden is officially planted! Last week we worked hard to prepare the soil, buy the plants and sketch out the plans. We planted everything on Monday. Here are some photos from the process...
Alexandra inspecting some flowers. Her favorite job is "dead-heading" flowers, even if they don't need to be.

Gigi waiting for the tiller to come around again. She supervises everything & everyone that goes in and out of the garden. Unfortunately, she's been relieved of her position since we've officially banned her from the garden as of Monday. She was caught chewing on the leaves of the new plants and also stealing strawberries.

A row of tomatoes.

A sweet strawberry blossom.

What did we plant?

Tomatoes-classic, roma & cherry
Eggplants-oblong & globe
Peppers-green, florinis & those green "banana" peppers...the kind that you find in salads and that you can also fry. (have to find their proper name)
Cucumbers-a lot of them!
Zucchini
Melons-honey dew & watermelon
Squash
Basil
Strawberries (actually planted in March but relocated Monday)

That's it for now. We'll be adding more tomatoes & cucumbers at the end of the month and I still have to plant some seeds & romaine lettuce this week. Wish us luck with our first real summer garden!

  2. Gigi - tsk tsk. Can't blame her really, I'd eat the strawberries too. Geena eats the low hanging raspberries, crawling into the bushes and grazing like a goat.
I love a garden. You all are going to eat really well.

  4. Christie-LOL! I'm always on borrowed time...

Syd-I know, strawberries are delicious so I can't blame her. Until I had Gigi, I didn't realize that dogs are into eating greens. She loves them!
About the garden...we've always wanted one. I hope to lose weight and save money this summer.

Linda-I'll keep you guys posted with the progress.
Oh, and I didn't know that you had a peach tree! Yes, do take pictures of it. Is it in front or back....or the side. I guess that I was always too busy to stop & look at your trees. Enjoy it! The blossoms are so pretty.

  6. Lulu-Thanks! About planting...it's the procrastinating that holds me back sometimes. Once I actually get to it-it really doesn't take that long. Good luck with your planting!

  7. You are going to have a wonderful garden. Just thinking about those tomatoes should make you happy! At least in the US, those peppers are called Italian frying peppers or cubanelles.

  8. Thanks Laurie. You know, I refer to them as "tiganites" here so I haven't figured the correct name. I have heard them being called Italian frying peppers and cubanelles...also, I've seen them in Milwaukee and they're sold as "Hungarian" sweet peppers (?) -or so I think. It's been way too long for me to remember! I've got to get all of this figured out over here. Thanks again.:)

  10. Hey, I used to grow stuff in pots back home. I grew tomatoes, cucumbers and spices on my porch. But again, I'd be glad to share the wealth!
I'm glad that we have the room...but it's soooooo much work!!

  11. I might try the pot idea someday. And by that I don't mean growing pot. I need to start with something easy and go from there, because I am not real good with plants.
