Garden update

Well, it's been a few weeks since we planted our vegetable garden and I'll have to admit that I haven't spent a lot of time back there. Up until now, I've been the one who loved to garden but I think that my husband catching on. I always make sure to water the garden and he checks to make sure that I have. He put in the irrigation system, installed all of the stakes to support the plants and made sure that we have room to add more plants in a week or so. Each time that he sees a neighbor or family member with experience he asks for advice. We've been learning a lot from those all-knowing experienced elders. What I love about asking for advice is that those who we ask -are so willing to take the time to show us the right way to care for our trees & plants and they even go so far as do some of the work themselves, it's really nice. Here's one picture of our garden...

Here are some Roma tomatoes. I can't believe how fast they've come about...

Little cherry tomatoes...
Tons of oregano. I have a feeling that I'll be drying it and sending it to my friends & family back home...
The kids are always with us in the garden. They've been a part of it from the beginning and I'm really glad that they are enthusiastic about learning. They've planted seeds & plants, watered & weeded. Although, they do spend more time catching bugs they're already learning so much about their environment. I'm so glad that we can share this experience with them. Now, I have to go check out the trees in the yard. The apples, walnuts, almonds and peaches are already abundant. Gotta get to work!

  4. Kat,I know, that's how I felt about our neighbors in Milwaukee. I'd sit on my balcony and look down at their beautiful garden. But, they did share. I can't wait to read about the oregano.

Thanks Linda. I love your garden too. But, apparently -we haven't planted enough. So we'll add to it this week.

  6. Cheryl, your tomatoes are looking grand! The whole project is just fantastic and it's great that the kids are enjoying it to. Now you just need to wait for them to grow up a little so they can be your regular garden workers! I enjoy discussing gadening with those older than I because so much wisdom is inherited through conversation rather than read from a book. And I can't wait to see what you do with all your glorious tomatoes!!!

  7. Maria, thanks-it is nice to read about what other families are doing in Greece. I've read about your challenges with packing healthy lunches etc...and I can only relate.
I'm sure that it will get easier for us here, we'll have been here a year in July. I'm still missing "home" quite a bit but also focusing this one. I'm happy that we are all healthy and have the opportunity to experience this change in our lives. Thanks for the support!

Laurie, thanks! I can't wait until the tomatoes are ripe! I know, I can't wait until the kids grow up and help with errr...everything! :)
We like discussing the garden with our older friends/family too-and it's funny how everyone has their own method. What's even better is that our neighbors keep checking on us to see if we've listened to their advice. (can you say pressure?) I'm going to learn how to preserve tomatoes from Kosta's aunt up the road. She plants a lot more Romas so that she can have them all year long. It should be interesting. Have a great weekend!
